In general the weather in Zanzibar is always well suited for travellers, but temperatures are a bit lower during the annual rain season. You can expect temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius during the entire year, with most days hovering between 25 – 30 degrees Celsius. Due to its location in the subtropics, Zanzibar has a comparatively high average humidity of 65%, with up to 73% during April. April is also the month in which most of the annual rainfall occurs, approximately 383mm spread over 18 rainy days on average.

January is certainly one of the hotter months in Zanzibar with a mean temperature of 28,8 degrees celsius. The temperatures range from a minimum of 24,7 degrees Celsius up to a maximum of 32,8 degrees Celsius. January in Zanzibar also offers lots of opportunities to tan yourself on one of Zanzibars dreamlike beaches with an average of 9 hours of sunshine per day. Consequently monthly precipitation and humidity in January lay in the lower end of the annual spectrum.

Zanzibar weather - February

The island’s weather during this month is characterized by warm temperatures and gentle sea breezes, creating an ideal environment for both exploration and contributing to community projects. February in Zanzibar brings pleasant conditions, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). The island experiences minimal rainfall, ensuring clear skies and perfect visibility for your adventures. The Indian Ocean maintains a comfortable temperature, inviting you to indulge in the breathtaking coastal landscapes and vibrant marine life.

Zanzibar weather - March

March in Zanzibar welcomes a delightful climate with temperatures ranging from 26 to 31 degrees Celsius (79 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit). March also marks the beginning of the annual rain season, with an average of 150mm of precipitation during the entire month. Unlike rainy seasons in the northern hemisphere, this does not imply dizzy days with chilly temperatures, but the regular occurrence of heavy  afternoon showers. If you are willing to adapt to these showers, you can still have a great time in Zanzibar and learn to enjoy the unique experience of a tropical rain season.  The Indian Ocean remains inviting nonetheless, providing the perfect backdrop for leisure and volunteer activities.

Zanzibar weather - April

The peak of the annual rain season takes place in April, with a mean precipitation of 385 mm.  Humidity is also at its highest with an average of 73%. Despite the April being a very wet month, temperatures remain pleasant with the mean temperature being 27,8 degrees Celsius. Sunshine on the other hand reaches its annual minimum in April with an average of „only“ 6 hours of sunshine per day. The Indian Ocean around Zanzibar reaches its annual peak temperature of 29,5 degrees Celsius in April, making April a great time to travel for those looking to enjoy the tropical waters.

April is not the typical time for tourists to rush to Zanzibar and thus a great time for travellers looking to avoid crowded beaches and get a closer, more authentic look at the local culture. Similar to March, showers will not last for an entire day and the weather still provides ample opportunities to explore the island.

Zanzibar weather - May

The weather in May is still largely influenced by the annual rain season, which concludes towards the end of the month. The average precipitation is still comparatively high with 255mm during May and the relative humidity of 69% is only surpassed by that in April. The temperatures drop in comparison to April with an average of 26,9 degrees Celsius. The temperatures in May bottom at 24 and peak 29,9 degrees Celsius, mild for Zanzibari standards, but pleasant and tropical compared to European or North American temperatures.

Just like in April, you are unlikely to encounter an island flooded by tourists, when travelling to Zanzibar in May. The temperatures may be a little bit lower than those during the hot season, but still offer a great escape for those arriving from the northern hemisphere.

 

Zanzibar weather - June

Temperatures in July are colder compared to most of the other months, but are still tropical and pleasant. The mean temperature is 25,7 degrees Celsius, with few deviations above and below. Since July is part of the dry season, you won’t have to worry about sudden rainfall or staggering humidity. 

For wildlife enthusiasts, July is prime for a visit to Jozani Forest, home to the endangered red colobus monkey. The drier conditions make it easier to navigate the trails, enhancing your chances of spotting these captivating creatures in their natural habitat.
